The Turkish Van cat breed is a variation of the predominantly white Turkish Angora. They were recognized as an
individual natural breed when, in 1955, a British breeders Laura Lushington and Sonia Halliday bought a couple Turkish Vans from Turkey and and successfully bred them and the offspring bore the same auburn accents as the parents. This brought on the realization that the markings were a strong, natural genetic trait and, indeed, a separate breed from the Turkish Angora.
Where most Turkish Angoras are solid white, these little beauties have auburn accents on their heads and tails. They are svelte and elegant, medium to small in size.
The Turkish Van is extremely loyal and intelligent breed. They will get their delicate
paws into all sorts of cabinets, boxes, crawl-spaces, attics and garages, but their loyalty will keep them coming back to their family. They are astute hunters when they are not being groomed or preening themselves, so expect a mouse-free house!
